Trails, Parks and More in the Boyne City area





Located on beautiful Lake Charlevoix, Boyne City has a vibrant downtown with several tasty restaurants and unique shops on Water Street and Lake Street.

The town is a favorite with boaters, campers and fishermen, who come to play on the water during the summer. The Boyne City area has several nice parks and boat launches on Lake Charlevoix. The swimming beaches at Young State Park and Peninsula Public Beach are great places to relax and splash on hot, lazy summer day.

Young State Park

Young State Park is a summertime destination, located a little over a mile from downtown Boyne City. Its large, sandy swimming beach on Lake Charlevoix is a great spot to cool off during the summer and watch the sunset. The park has winding nature trails through a pine forest for hiking.

During the winter months, the park is a quiet place, but you can use its nature trails for cross-country skiing.

Young State Park has three campgrounds, a boat launch, and a pristine inland lake, called Mirror Lake. For campground reservation information, visit the DNR's web site.

Boyne City Area Parks

Whiting Park is a family camping spot on the west side of Lake Charlevoix. The park has a sandy swimming beach, volleyball court, ballfield, playgrounds and picnic spots. See the Charlevoix County Parks site for current camping rates and reservation information. Whiting Park also has two buildings and pavilions that can be rented for gatherings.

Veteran's Memorial Park in Boyne City features a boat launch, baseball diamond, playscape, walking path, and much more. From May to October, picnic tables and grills are available for public use. F. Grant Moore Municipal Marina is located at Veteran's Memorial Park and has 42 boat slips. A small lighthouse overlooks the public marina. Boyne City Historical Museum is also located at the park and features many items from the city's past.

Two Boyne City Parks on Front Street, southwest of downtown, offer public access to Lake Charlevoix. Peninsula Public Beach has a small swimming beach, beach volleyball court, playground, and picnic area. Further west on Front Street, Tannery Park has a small picnic area and a beautiful view of the lake.

For lovers of fresh produce, Old City Park hosts a farmers market in Boyne City from May through October. The farmers market is open every Wednesday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Boyne City has well-maintained athletic facilities located northeast of downtown. There are two baseball diamonds on North Street that include port-a-pots and a small concession area. Rotary Park on State Street has baseball diamonds, soccer fields, tennis courts, and a playground.

Boyne City Area Bike Routes & Trails

Cyclists can use combination of wide-shoulder bike lanes and paved trails to ride from Young State Park through Boyne City to Whiting Park. The bike route offers spectacular views of Lake Charlevoix. See the maps page for the detailed route.

For cyclists who like a longer route, a wide-shoulder bike route on M-75 goes from Boyne City to Boyne Falls. Use caution when riding next to the road.

Young State Park has miles of hiking trails that wind through wooded areas and loop around the park.

Near downtown, Veteran's Memorial Park has a short walking path that has views of the municipal marina and Lake Charlevoix.

Boating and Kayaking

Lake Charlevoix is a boater's paradise and provides ample space for tubing, waterskiing, and sailing. The large lake can be used to reach Round Lake, Lake Michigan, and Charlevoix.

Public boat ramps are located in Boyne City at F. Grant Moore Municipal Marina and on the north side of town at 525 N Lake Street. The boat launch at 525 N Lake Street is better suited for large boats and includes at a fish-cleaning station, restrooms, and a large parking lot for vehicles with boat trailers. The launch at the municipal marina is ideal for small recreational boats, personal watercraft, kayaks, and canoes because of the shallower water in the area. Young State Park also has a boat launch.

F. Grant Moore Municipal Marina, Boyne City's public marina, has 42 boat slips, with 18 slips available for rent by transient boaters. The marina features electrical and water service, pump-out, showers, and restrooms. Veteran's Memorial Park and downtown Boyne City are located close to the marina. Kayaks can be launched near the the boat launch area at F. Grant Moore Municipal Marina and from the launch area at Young State Park. Whiting Park also has a kayak launch area.

Fishing

Lake Charlevoix is connected to Round Lake, which leads to Lake Michigan. Anglers can find plentiful fishing near Boyne City on the chain of lakes. Salmon, steelhead, lake trout, brown trout, smallmouth bass, and walleye are some of the fish that can be caught in the area.

You can fish from shore on the south side of Veteran's Memorial Park.

A valid fishing license is required to fish on Michigan lakes and waterways, and you can get a Michigan fishing license online at the Michigan DNR E-License web site and at bait shops and sporting goods stores.
