Port Sanilac Area Attractions, Parks, Trails and More

Port Sanilac is a cozy lakeshore community on Lake Huron. With a welcoming harbor and marina, the town is a great place for boating and fishing.

Cyclists can enjoy bike rides between Port Sanilac and the neighboring communities of Lexington and Carsonville using shoulder bike routes.

Port Sanilac Harbor

Port Sanilac has a nice marina at the end of Main Street that provides easy access to Lake Huron. There are 32 seasonal boat slips and 35 transient slips available. Amenities include water, electricity (30 and 50 amp), restrooms, showers, ice, laundry, gasoline, diesel, marine repairs, and supplies. The marina operates from April 1 to October 31 and can be reached by phone at (810)622-9610 or (810)622-8818. Online reservations can be made through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources web site.

North of the marina on Lake Street, there is a boat launch with multiple boat ramps. A large parking area for vehicles and boat trailers is located nearby. Restrooms and a fish-cleaning station are located a short distance from the boat launch.

Port Sanilac Parks

There are a few small parks in Port Sanilac for outdoor recreation.
  • Adjacent to Port Sanilac Harbor, there is a small park on the south side of Main Street. A round picnic shelter has nice views of the marina area. There is a playground with swings and a playscape, with restrooms nearby.

  • On Church Street behind Bark Shanty Community Center, there are two baseball diamonds, a skate park, and an inline rink with a basketball hoop.

  • Behind the post office on M-25, there is a small park with a tennis court and basketball court.

Bike Routes

In the Port Sanilac area, there are shoulder bike routes that can be used to ride to neighboring communities. Always use caution and obey traffic laws when riding next to the road.
  • Cyclists can ride along the paved shoulders of M-46 between Carsonville and Port Sanilac. It's approximately seven miles one way. Within the communities, you'll need on the outside of the vehicle lanes where there isn't a shoulder.

  • Using the wide paved shoulder along M-25, you can ride 11 miles south to Lexington.

  • For a longer bike route, you can ride between Port Sanilac and the communities that are north of town. Using the wide paved shoulder of M-25, you can ride to Harbor Beach (30 miles), Port Austin (55 miles), or Sebewaing (93 miles). Depending on the time of day and year, M-25 can be busy, but it generally has moderate traffic. You'll experience greater traffic when riding through the villages and communities than you will along the stretches between towns. Use caution and stay alert when riding on the shoulder of M-25.

Historic Locations

Located near the southern city limits of Port Sanilac, Sanilac County Historic Village and Museum has over a dozen historic buildings on ten acres. Many of the buildings were relocated to the site to preserve their legacy. The centerpiece of the village is the Loop-Harrison Mansion, which was built in the 1870s. Other buildings include: the Huckins Schoolhouse (1847), Museum Church (1850s), Platt's General Store (1876), Banner Cabin (1880s), and Carriage Barn (late 1880s). The village is located on Ridge Street/M-25 and is open from early June through the end of August. See the Sanilac County Historic Village & Museum web site for hours of operation.

Port Sanilac Lighthouse on Lake Street was established in 1886. The lighthouse has been an important beacon, serving as the first lighthouse on Lake Huron that ships see after leaving the St. Clair River. It has a 59-foot tower and a fourth-order Fresnel lens. The lighthouse is closed to the public.

The Raymond House Inn in Port Sanilac is a bed and breakfast that's located in a Victorian-era house. The location was built in 1872 and was added to the Michigan Register of Historical Sites in 1992. For reservation information, visit the Raymond House Inn web site.

The Barn Theatre is located on the grounds of the Sanilac County Historic Village. Since 1980, the location has hosted entertainment events. See the Barn Theatre's web site for a schedule of upcoming performances.

In Port Sanilac, there are two Michigan Historical Markers that describe places and people from the town's past. The green markers are in locations that are considered significant by the Michigan Historical Commission. A marker is located in front of the Loop-Harrison Mansion on Ridge Street/M-25 and next to the old town hall in downtown.
