St. Charles Parks, Trails, Fishing, Boating & More

St. Charles is located on the Bad River and features a quaint downtown with several stores and businesses. The town attracts visitors trail enthusiasts and fishermen, who cast their lines in the Bad River for walleye and suckers.

Recreational Trails

The Saginaw Valley Rail Trail starts in St. Charles at Lumberjack Park and angles north-northeast to Stroebel Road. The trail is over 9 miles long and is used for biking, jogging, walking, and roller-blading. The trailhead park in St. Charles is off Water Street. An old railroad bridge at the trailhead takes visitors across the Bad River and offers a scenic view.

St. Charles Park has a paved trail that winds around the park, passing playgrounds, ball diamonds, and the inline rink. The trail leaves the park and follows along M-52 to Sunview and then crosses M-52 to connect to the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail.

Public Parks

St. Charles Park is a large recreational area with a couple of playgrounds, a skate park, swimming pool, an inline roller rink, baseball diamonds, and picnic pavillion. The park's large gazebo is the site for "Music in the Park" during the summer. St. Charles Park's play ark is a favorite with kids who visit the park. A disc golf course starts south of the park's drive to the pool and inline rink and uses the woods on the west side of the park. St. Charles Park has couple of large parking lots and is a popular location during the summer.

Lumberjack Park has a playground, boat launch, and picnic area. The park also serves as the trailhead for The Saginaw Valley Rail Trail. The park's grassy hill is great for relaxing and offers a beautiful view of the Bad River. An historical marker at the park marks the spot where Hiram Davis built the first house in St. Charles and details the early beginnings of the village.

St. Charles Waterfowl Observatory is on the corner of Spruce Street and M-52 and features numerous waterfowl. The site is open year-round.

Boating & Fishing

The Bad River flows through St. Charles, and the river attracts fishermen who try to catch walleye, suckers, carp and bass. You can fish on the river's banks in the vicinity of Lumberjack Park or take a boat down the river for fishing trip.

Flat bottom boats work well on the Bad River, and you can launch a boat at Lumberjack Park, near the trailhead for the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail.

A valid fishing license is required to fish on Michigan lakes and waterways. You can get a license online at the Michigan DNR E-License web site and at bait shops and sporting goods stores.
